RIM's Review of The Upside of the Down Low, a Pastor’s Wife’s Memoir by Yolanda Stephen

RIM's Review of
The Upside of the Down Low, a Pastor’s Wife’s Memoir
by  Yolanda Stephen

This offering is billed as an inspirational testatment to the power of faith in the face of overwhelming adversity. The main characters, Edgar Jacksyn (PJ) and his wife, Yolanda's story told through her eyes during their 3-plus year union and his subsequent demise.

The story was intriguing enough to hold the attention of the reader, though it felt very rushed. There, in my opinion, should have been much more detail given so that the reader could fully understand not just Yolanda and her past, but also Edgars. As the story plays out, this missing information becomes very pertinent. The meeting, dating, and marriage all happened so quickly that one had to go back and reread certain sections to make sure one had not missed anything.

The tone of the book began to change almost midway into more of a subtle bashing of Edgar as a minister versus man, with Yolanda more and more in the role of hapless victim. This position I couldn't condone simply due to Yolanda's own arrogance and vanity that was demonstrated at the beginning of the book. There were of course portions where one did feel sympathy for her, but again, questioned her own contribution to the shambles that had become their existence together.

Of course at the end of the unfolding events one is glad to know that Yolanda has so profoundly embraced her faith and all the lessons taught, but it also begs the question, being a pastor's child, where was the faith, the discernment, before she ever walked into the situation. This is not judgement nor condemnation, simply a query. It is this reviewers opinion that this book could become a very inspirational and powerful testament to God's ability to heal, deliver, and set free, those things that do plague us, but without the biases that are presented inside it right now, and with more emphasis on the faithbuilding and healing process.

Readers In Motion Author Spotlight of September 2010- Author Lady La

Readers In Motion Author
Spotlight of September 2010-
Author Lady La

1. Tell us a little about you.
I’m a mother of three girls. I’ve been a Paralegal/Legal Office Assistant since 2003. I graduated from Robert Morris College with my Associates Degree in Applied Science, with my major being Paralegal/Legal Office Assistant. I’ve been writing poetry since my Freshman year of High School.

2. How did you come up with the idea for your book?
This is going to sound crazy. But I dreamt of my book, before I knew I wanted to write one. My book came to me in a dream and I woke up the next morning and sat at my computer and wrote half of my book right there on the spot.

3. Hollywood is calling your book. Who would you like to see play the part of your main characters?
Samantha, I can see being played by Nia Long.
Lester – I can see being played by Morris Chestnut
Louise – I can see being played by Taraji P. Henson
Eric – I can see being played by Michael Ealy

4. What would you consider your writing style?
Urban Romance. I’m a hopeless romantic and love, romance and drama, come easy for me. I have so much inspiration around me every day. I try to find ways to use what I see or hear and translate it into a story or situation and then move on and try to work it into a book. Everyone has relationship/marital issues, but not everyone wants to talk about it. So I that with me when writing. Sometimes it’s challenging, because I don’t want my characters to all have the same problems every time I write, but I want to broaden my horizon and explore all possibilities as far as relationships and marriage goes.

5. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Yes. JReal, Traci Bee, Kr Bankston, Shante Hannon and Cotton Carpenter to name a few.

6. Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
I learned alot! But what I’ve learned and continue to use is that I have to be true to my work. I can’t let anyone try and change my vision. My writing reflects me as a person, and if I let someone change that, then the readers won’t get the chance to know me as a writer.

7. Who designed the covers?
Donna OsbornClark of Creations By Donna.

8. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor? And why?
I would have to say Marlon Mccaulsky. He is very supportive of my works. Even before I decided to pen Which Way To Turn, I was going to publish my first book of poems. He has given me insight, pointers, direction and most of all his support. He’s believed in me since day one and I cherish that. He has showed me that you can have a fan base and still be down to earth and humble in whatever you do. To take criticism for exactly what it is. If I can learn from it, then take what I can use and run with it, the rest leave it where it is.

9. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Yes. Giving my characters their own voice and sense of direction and to make it unique and different. When writing multiple characters, you want them each to stand out in their own way and possibly have a message that the readers can take and learn from.

10. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I want to say THANK YOU for reading my work. I hope that I don’t disappoint you, and I hope to keep you all as avid readers. I hope that you find a message in each book that I write. Rather it helps you or someone you know.

RIM'S Review of Beautiful Disasters by Dawn Jaspers

Beautiful Disasters by Dawn Jaspers

Anika Conners is a woman born from hurt and pain. Her conception was that of rape from a whiteman in a small town in South Carolina where racism still looms. She is determined to get even with the man that took her mother’s life, but the question is will she get back at the right man. Along this journey of her revenge, she also plans on making a pit stop to get back at her half sister; Lisa. She is doing this to her sister to make sure that she does not receive her part of the inheritance left by their father. So Anika makes it a point to let everyone know her sister’s true secret.

Akina also has a strong sexual craving. While falling in love with Tatyana Simmons she was unknowingly sleeping with Tatyana’s husband, David Walters who is in in love with her. But she wants none of them after a chance meeting with an old friend from high school, Eric. The passion between Eric and Anika starts off as just that passion but the passion is turning into love. But Anika is not ready for true love or is she?

So many sub stories that are linked to one story is what I can sum up the concept of this book to be and Dawn Jasper could have not done this better. There was at no point where I was confused about any of the plot lines. The Author gave this character the hurt and pain that any person in this situation would feel. The book has such a smooth flow that it was finished in one day. I cannot wait until the sequel comes out.

RIM's Review of God is in the Equation by Adrienna Turner

God is in the Equation
by Adrienna Turner
Sometimes in life we all can use some help. We pray, talk to our friends, seek inspiration, and read either a book or a Bible. It is in those times that we look for something that speaks to us and in those times we realize we make the simple things difficult tasks that defeat our everyday thinking and living. When in actuality our situation is much more simple than we realized and in this book are steps to keep us going on this journey called life.

In this book the author hits you with quick steps that are just like the title says, an equation. Steps that we have all learned at some point in our school age so need not worry about your math skills. The steps are add, subtract, multiply and divide. Not only are the steps there but the reasoning an...d application also. And of course some thought provoking homework as to how the equation will be used in day to day activities and the long term progression of your life. Along with the simple math steps there are other helpful skills such as dream, study, figuring out the equation and completion.

This is not your average self help book, this is calling everyone that calls themselves a Christian to take note of what they are doing and in some cases not. The author is backed by her own personal knowledge, advice, nuggets of wisdom that she has learned from other profound teachers and leaders like Dr. Joyce Meyer and she also uses contextual scripture. This will help anyone looking for a better way to live their predestined life the way it was intended to be lived. Also help one find the love, peace, joy and the perseverance to keep on keeping on.

RIM's Review of How Could My Husband Be Gay By Ondrea L. Davis and J'son M. Lee

How Could My Husband Be Gay By Ondrea L. Davis & J’son M. Lee

Society's skewed views on Homosexuality causes those who would undoubtedly live freely and happily, to hide and live a life full of secrets. These secrets are not your normal every day secrets, but those that affect everyone involved.

Living the fairytale every little girl dreams of, Ondrea quickly finds out that happiness is like those palaces in fairytales whose gates are guarded by dragons: we must fight in order to conquer it.

How Could My Husband be Gay is an autobiographical account of Ondrea’s experience. The novel is roller coaster ride of emotion that takes you through all of Ondrea’s highs and lows. Because of all the “down low” situations popping up all over the place I would highly recommend this to any and everyone. So you’re not left asking how my husband could be Gay. The reviewer gives this 5 stars.

RIM's Review of Breaux by Chamsil

Revenge is a confession of pain and for Breaux that is exactly what he is feeling, nothing but pure unadulterated PAIN. After the untimely death of his twin brother Vernaud, Breaux is hell bent on revenge; anyone that comes within arm’s length is sure to feel his fury.

Breaux is a very quick read that will have you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The fact that it is written in a nontraditional format actually enhances the overall experience, it allows you to fully feel Breaux’s anguish and pain as well see the whole experience through his eyes. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a fast paced enticing read. The reviewer gives this 4.9 stars because it ended too fast.

RIM'S Review of The Temptation Of Love by Amore

RIM'S Review of The Temptation Of Love by Amore

Alexander Love is an attorney who is looking to make his way up the corporate ladder. Now Love has no time for love but you will notice that you cannot run from love or what's destined for you. Jada Whitman is the best friend of Ami, cousin of Alexander. When these two lay eyes on each other it is love at first sight but neither of them want to admit it. After avoiding the burning passion and desire that they have for each other, Alex asks Jada out for a date. Reluctantly she says yes.

Of course good love has it trials and that is true when it comes to Jada and Alex. Jada is the one that has the stronghold against relationships. Because of the fact that she lost her family so many years ago to a car accident, she felt that she was never ...really able to fall in love with someone. A love interest from Alex’s past sees the achievements of Alex and decides that she wants him back and will got through any means to get him. Now on the other side of the fence there is someone that is in love with Jada and feels it is time to let it be known. When these two forces work together the drama is taken to another level. Will they succeed in the quest? Will true love conquer drama?

Amore did as great job with this being her first novel. Many secondary characters are used to bring little details to light. The verbal interaction with the characters is a relief from the descriptive novels that are out today. I would like to see how the next installment of this book would be. It has sort of a thrown together ending but it does leave the novel open for a new novel.

RIM'S AUTHOR OF THE MONTH- Lekeica BriMonae

RIM'S AUTHOR OF THE MONTH
Lekeica BriMonae

Tell us about you.
Well, what do you really want to know? I am a mom of five, an academic advisor and coordinator of testing at CCRI, plus a full time student.

We heard you are a writer. What is your writing style?
Hmm, that's a hard one because I really don't have a particular style. I just write what the voices tell me and we go from there.

What made you want to write My Brother's Keeper?
I was taking a reading in short stories class and me in the instructor got into it because all of the stories we were reading were ones I read in high school. So I asked if we could read other genres or something else. He said that "African American lit" didn’t really have any value and he posed a challenge and the rest is history. (LOL)

How did you come up with the title?
I didn't a member of RIM came up with the title..Thanks Kim and Minah.

What book are you reading now?
Umm, I just finished Material girl 2 by Keisha Erving and I am following Kr Bankston's serial drama..Thin Ice. Also, I just finished all three of SK's Sin City Heat Series plus the book I have to review for RIM.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Sometimes it's hard to focus because the voices all want to heard at the same time. I know that might sound a little crazy but anything can trigger a story line to pop into my head.

Who designed the covers?
Me!!

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
Now this is a loaded question because I have at least 10 favorites and several runner ups...

What is a hidden talent that you have?
ROTFLMAO... I don't have any that I can put out there like that.

You are stuck on an island, you can carry three authors. Who would those three authors be?
Come on three this is the hardest question in the dang world. But I would to need to bring folks I know are guaranteed to deliver; so I say KR Bankston, Keith Williams and Chamsil.  Umm now take that back maybe Elizabeth Lashaun, Keith Gaston and Teresa Patterson. Nope take that back. My grandma always what you do for one you have to do for everyone. So  guess what WE ALL are going to be stuck on that damn island...LOL

January Book Of the Month Interview with Chamsil Phillps. Author of Breaux

1. Tell us a little about you.
My name is CHAMSIL. I am an Atlanta, GA-based author/poet/spoken word artist who hails from Kalamazoo, Michigan. I've been writing since 1998, initially starting with writing rhymes in my spare time when I was on the brink of beginning my senior year at Western Michigan University. The one thing that really inspired me to write was the album 'Aquemini' from the hip-hop group, OutKast. The music and the lyrics on that album moved me so much and I listened to it so frequently, that I decided that I needed to find a way to channel some of my thoughts and creativity via writing. That was essentially where my journey began. I did a lot of on-line battling over the next year with cats all over the world and that only further helped strenghten my writing skills. Personally, I think that if it wasn't for that period, I may not have become so passionate about writing and blossomed into the writer that I have become today. I dibbled and dabbled in short stories that I pretty much kept to myself, because I wasn't really sure how it would be received. I also started writing poetry. Then I felt more comfortable with sharing my work in 2004, which translated into me performing at local open mics and poetry slams, which then translated into me attempting to write my first novel, Unbeknownst, in 2005 (published in 2010). I released a slew of free eBooks and poems and conceptualized my two books that were destined to follow: the LOAD memoirs (An Erotiq Anthology) and Breaux (An Urban Nightmare) in 2008 (published in 2010 and 2011, respectively). I got on my steel-toed boots and am on a mission to kick in the doors of this literary fortress. I won't stop until somebody or something kills me.

2. How did you come up with the title,  Breaux?
The title 'Breaux' came about in a funny way, actually. Every since my early teens, I was a HUGE fan of the New Orleans Saints football team. I still am. I had some friends that I came up with that were from New Orleans, so I learned so much about the city. I even attended a historical black college, Xavier University of Louisiana, right after I graduated from high school. Although my time there was short, I absorbed New Orleans like a sponge. I own albums by the rapper, Juvenile, who is a native of New Orleans and a product of the Magnolia Housing Development, Uptown 3rd Ward. So, in one of the songs from his album 'Solja Rags' (circa 1997), he mentioned a hotel/motel called Reauxchambreaux (which I may be butchering the spelling of it), plus I familiar with the slogan, "Geaux Saints", from back in the 90's. I thought it was a very eclectic way of spelling it and so New Orleans-esque, I kept the title locked in my memory bank. So, when it was time to run with it, it was a no-brainer. 'Breaux' was it.

3. What inspired you to write this novel?
I was in a real dark place in my life. I was impacted by a downturn in the economy on a personal level and I was pissed off beyond belief. The manifestation was a culmination of my anger and frustration at 'the system'. Plus with a lot of the homework that I did on New Orleans, I knew that was just the setting to set this story in motion. I was well-versed on how I wanted the principal character to be, ranging from the pain, the misery, the angst, the psychological distress, etc. It's a tumultuous story. But, I felt I had to tell it. More importantly, I had to tell it my way. I think I was able to successfully. The thing that I appreciate the most about this experience is that I was actually able to write a portion of the book in New Orleans during a visit to the city in early 2009. Breaux has so much more sentimental value because of that.

4. What was the hardest part of writing?
The hardest part of writing 'Breaux' was the struggle with not only the storyline, but the extreme levels of violence that takes place in the crucial parts of the book. The book was so out of control, that I felt obligated to put a disclaimer in the beginning credits. I definitely don't want people to have a misconception and believe that I feel the exact same way this character does. The lines between fiction and real life can really be blurry, especially when the writing is so powerful, dark and sinister. I'm a fun-loving guy who just loves to write and is very passionate about it. I will not lie, I surely had difficulty with some of the scenes that I wrote. But, all in all, I had to allow the reader to have a crystal clear vision of what was going on in the mind of Breaux, as well as his experiences. Vivid pictures painted....emotions viciously tainted.

5. Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I'm just a passionate writer with a voice trying to be heard. I strongly feel that I am the writer that readers can truly believe in. A CHAMSIL experience is unforgettable. Readers can visit my website at www.iamchamsil.com for all information CHAMSIL-related, including books, of course. Don't think twice...get (a) CHAMSIL book(s) in your life. :)

I would like to thank Readers In Motion Book Club for the time and the opportunity. It is greatly appreciated.

That's my word.

One love.

RIM's Review of Life Knows No Bounds: One Who Luvs U More by Andrea Clinton

Some may say that Alisa is spoiled and misunderstood. Some may say she is ghetto hood rat; but no one can say she isn’t strong and that she makes hustling her business. Alisa wants the finer things out of life and will use any hustler to obtain it; not taking feelings into consideration or thinking about any danger that may be involved. In order to get with this lady you have to have only one qualification:  a nice bankroll.
Omar is a hustler. Unlike the average hustler, he is for the money but he wants to use hustling as a short term means to a long term goal of a simple future. He is also a Muslim with a very strong belief. Omar has always had a special liking for Alisa but has never crossed that boundary because of the relationship to her brother until today.
Alisa and Omar after meeting have a desire for each other. Almost polar opposites, Alisa wants things quick and easy, living life in the fast lane. On the other hand Omar wants to build a lasting, yet comfortable life without being in the game forever. With two strong people each deeply entrenched in having their own way which, if any, desire will win?
This novel is not like other typical African American fiction street novels. It many cases it cannot be considered a street novel at all. The author, Andrea Clinton, in no way glamorizes the street game, but uses it as a background element to bring forth the true meaning of this book; change and love. With so many surprise surrounding these two characters many slow moments are over looked.
