RIM's Review of A Marriage of Convenience by Jewel Amethyst

RIM's Review of
A Marriage of Convenience by Jewel Amethyst

When one door closes a window opens, or so the cliché says.
Tamara is jilted at the altar and financially taken for everything she has by a con artist. When the bills are due and she is unemployed; Tamara is looking for the window. Her best friend, Jordan, presents her with a request that will help her financially; yet the requirement is she marry a perfect stranger. When, to marry or lose everything, become her choices, Tamara takes the man and his money.  Yet what if the sham that they portray became real?

Tamara is a full figured beauty that doesn’t know she is beautiful. She is always comparing herself to her society approved thinner cousins as the standard of true beauty. Adding in straight hair or hair weaves and color contacts she again errantly thinks are necessary to prove one’s beauty. In accepting the attention and compliments of her husband, Tamara learns that her natural, confident self is all the beauty she needs.

Kwabena is a handsome accomplished scientist. He has many degrees and awards to back his intelligence up; however, he conveys himself to Tamara as just another man from Ghana. He never lets on about his company, his accomplishments, or even his ability to speak several other languages. Kwabena like Tamara has his own hidden issues; including running from an arranged marriage and an evil ex fiancé that wants him back.

Through all the twists and turns of this relationship, one is taken for a multicultural experience. The reader will learn about Jamaican, Ghanaian, and African foods, clothing, history and even a few words. The interaction between the American family and Ghanaian family shows that no matter the language, love and respect is universal.  As this couple faces their pasts collectively, they must also look to there future to see if once their arrangement is fulfilled will they remain a couple? Can what was supposed to be a temporary fix be something permanent?

RIM's Reviews Dangerous Pleasures by Fiona Zedde

Dangerous Pleasures by Fiona Zedde

Two friends who are brought together by schoolyard drama are forever inseparable. Mayson met Renee when her family moved from Jamaica to Dana Point, when the other kids picked on her for her accent Renee defended her; and for the rest of their lives they would defend each other. Renee would need defending for her choice to end her marriage of too many changes. Her ex-husband Linc always trying to change her to what he wants versus who she really is and with Mayson being a lesbian she needs to be defended from her ex flings that sometimes want more than a fling.

Renee is tired of being sweet, innocent, a damsel in distress Renee. After the divorce, she no longer sees the benefits of a traditional relationship other than the sex. Since there is nothing else she feels like she can control other than her sex partner she decides to do something for herself. So after much deliberation and some ill advice from Mayson, Renee signs up for an online dating site and finds someone to her liking and begins to get her groove back.

Mayson is never in a rut as far as sex goes; anytime she needs a fix she thumbs through her black book and finds someone to scratch the itch. However she has one rule; she does not have any desire to be a straight woman’s experiment into the art of lesbian sex.  As Mayson avoids relationships for booty calls, she finds herself in a ticklish position; she is now the center of a straight woman’s fantasies, which of course goes against her rule. Mayson soon realizes that fantasies can turn deadly.

Here we see love has no gender, has no hurt and sometimes has no sense of time. As each woman is forced to take off the blindfold, no matter the material it is made of, and see each other and herself for what they are. Decisions that can not be made by society’s standards or even the ones that can be dictated by corporate America, but from a loving heart. The heart wants what the heart wants and sometimes the easiest decision is the one that’s right in front of you.

RIM's Reviews Hot Fun In The Summertime by Chicki Brown

RIM's Reviews
Hot Fun In The Summertime
 by Chicki Brown

Every summer six friends rent a home on the Jersey shore for rest and relaxation but yet still manage to work. Linda is an accountant and real estate broker, Shontae is a fiction author, Doc and Kip are professors, Kinnick a model, and Jo a hair stylist to the stars. However this year Kip brings a friend, Devon, with him. He too is a model, heating up with the women in the house. On the first day they pay rent, divvy up chores, set down the ground rules and pick out rooms.  As everyone finds their own corner of paradise and set out to venture the beach, some old memories transform into new ones.
Kinnick, working as a video model, is constantly looking for the next come-up which is normally in a baller’s pocket. She plays a deadly game of being a rappers lady yet flirty with a mogul expecting neither to find out about the other. However when the lies catch up to her will she learn that a woman can have it all and not need to sell her body in the process?
Linda is coming out of an ugly divorce and is not looking for new seat filler just yet. However Doc has his sights set on her again this summer and is not letting her use her year old divorce as a crutch. As hard as Linda tries to control the situations surrounding her, she might have to let go of her preconceived notions of Doc and blast through her post divorce thoughts of men.
Kip, the forever player, is scoping the beaches for young women to fill his summer calendar and bed; however he needs to keep an eye out for the cops because an older black man dating young white females still causes some upset to the community. Seems archaic, but racism is still evident.  Kip seems quite smitten however by this summer’s catch no matter the consequences.
Shontae was hesitant to come this summer due to last summer’s debacle with Kinnick. However she has two things to accomplish this summer, getting her new novel done and the purchase of a home, and no one is coming between those goals, or so she thought. Devon seems bound and determined to get her attention and to get her to give love another chance.
Jo and Walter have been together for five years and he is ready to take it to the next step, a business partnership. Slightly disappointed Jo takes him up on his offer but not prepared for all the conditions that come with the hefty price tag. Will her dreams of being the best in the business leave her before they start?
Interesting how in three short months the issues that all the characters faced were things they had been using as crutches all their lives and as with any injury eventually the crutch is no longer useful.

RIM's Review of Inner Journey Home Letters to My Son, Love Dad by Malcolm Baptiste

Inner Journey Home Letters to My Son, Love Dad by  Malcolm Baptiste

As any parent that has a child you want what’s best for him or her, even when that means neglecting yourself of things or pushing past your own capacity. However some parents’ capacity is small because their own parents couldn’t get past generational issues, which then get passed on until someone can break the pattern.  In this story a father reaches out to his son that is now incarcerated and tries in his own way to encourage him and yet explain to him why things are they way they are.

Correspondence between father and son is a series of letters from the father’s prospective starting with the son’s court appeal trail date until the day they take a family photo.  In efforts to ease the son’s time in jail, the father starts from the beginning, his beginning, describing to his son the relationship with his parents, mostly his mother.  In efforts to make a son a better man she teaches him in a cruel way how to be man, talking negatively about him and worse yet to him, telling him things like he is worthless and will never be anything.  Later in life when the father becomes a drug addict he hears all the things she told him like a tape player and fights daily to prove her wrong and prove to himself he is worthy of all the good things life has to offer.

In need of help to get clean and stay clean the father enters rehab. In rehab he addresses all his issues from the negative tapes of his mom, the need of the drug, dating, and his own mental state.  Through some of the exercises in group therapy the father finds salvation and journaling. He begins to journal his life’s experiences in and out of rehab, in efforts to connect to his son he sends him excerpts of what he has written and what he feels about life and most importantly he constantly conveys his love for his son.

Readers probably would like to have liked to see more dialogue between the father and son. All the reader knows is that the son does respond to the letters but not aware of what he says. However readers can appreciate the honesty of the father, because most parents want to protect their child or children by not telling them what could essentially keep them from harm’s way.  So often we need help but to afraid to reach for it. A father’s love versus his attendance seemed to be an issue but in this case his love superseded his lack of attendance and a son sees a life outside of the 8 by 10 he is in.

RIM's Review of Keeper of My Soul by Keshia Dawn

RIM's Review of Caught Up By Jacob “JB” Burrage

RIM's Review of
Caught Up By Jacob “JB” Burrage

It was interesting how one moment changed everything for successful author Jeremiah Blackwood; and how sitting at the bus stop would put his world into super orbit. That day he meet a woman named Shirley, and while taking her from her man wasn't the plan, neither was all the hell that opened up from her existence in his life. As their crazy alignment becomes a relationship; lies, secrets, and other people, have Jeremiah wishing he had driven the day he meet her.

They exchanged numbers, chatted for a few days, and then Shirley made her move. After all the complaining about her man, she just needed someone to love her. How could he deny her when she possessed one of the best bodies he had ever seen? They had sex until the morning, yet Jeremiah awakes to an empty bed. This would happen a lot after their late night rendezvous. Finally as any man would, he forces her to decide choose him or her man. What he gets in response shakes his core and she chooses neither instead make moves with a woman.

As Shirley leads Jeremiah through a on again, off again, relationship he sexes down a few willing females: including Shirley's new girlfriend. The repercussions of her unwillingness to make a man or woman her main attraction leads this cast through some life or death situations.

The hypocrisy of the double standard is displayed frequently. While socially acceptable for a man to sleep around, a woman does it she is called everything but a woman when displays the exact same behavior. The author does however slightly redeem themselves and makes mention for men to take heed that the game they have so longed played is now being perfected by women.

Love has no shape, color, race, and nowadays gender, yet can be disguised by lust. Lust is the physical need to have someone where love is the desire of another's affection. Lust drives the hearts of men to kill for a one night stand, when love knows there are no more one nights there is only every night.

RIM's Review of God is in the Equation by Adrienna Turner

God is in the Equation
by Adrienna Turner
Sometimes in life we all can use some help. We pray, talk to our friends, seek inspiration, and read either a book or a Bible. It is in those times that we look for something that speaks to us and in those times we realize we make the simple things difficult tasks that defeat our everyday thinking and living. When in actuality our situation is much more simple than we realized and in this book are steps to keep us going on this journey called life.

In this book the author hits you with quick steps that are just like the title says, an equation. Steps that we have all learned at some point in our school age so need not worry about your math skills. The steps are add, subtract, multiply and divide. Not only are the steps there but the reasoning an...d application also. And of course some thought provoking homework as to how the equation will be used in day to day activities and the long term progression of your life. Along with the simple math steps there are other helpful skills such as dream, study, figuring out the equation and completion.

This is not your average self help book, this is calling everyone that calls themselves a Christian to take note of what they are doing and in some cases not. The author is backed by her own personal knowledge, advice, nuggets of wisdom that she has learned from other profound teachers and leaders like Dr. Joyce Meyer and she also uses contextual scripture. This will help anyone looking for a better way to live their predestined life the way it was intended to be lived. Also help one find the love, peace, joy and the perseverance to keep on keeping on.

RIM's Review of King of the Game by KR Bankston

King of The Game by KR Bankston

Armani Proctor runs TMK, the Music Kingdom, records. He molds , manages, and replaces the best voices in the industry. However he is not to be played with. The music is more of an hobby, whereas the streets are his prime piece of realty. Where most people see a successful, handsome, hardworking businessman, some know him by another name that will make enemies blood run cold. As Armani tries to keep the music fresh, he has to find the balance in keeping his right hand from knowing what his left hand is doing. But soon he will realize that both worlds will collide and the casualties could cost him more than he is willing to pay.

Armani prides himself for his business sense but has not been lucky in love. However his work throws him a great opportunity when ...he meets writer Sydney Hollingsworth. As Armani pursues her, Sydney is faced with career and personal issues. Her childhood experiences have trained her heart not to trust or let anyone close to her because once they get close they will only leave her. Unfortunately for them if Armani's true life comes to light it will destroy them both.

Armani's secret is mostly safe except for Sydney's mother, Cassandra. She might be a junkie and a prostitute but she knows the truth. When she plans to disrupt Sydney and Armani's perfect life, Armani does what any man in his position would do, he takes care of the issue.

As the other characters lives intermingle in the love story, one thing remains true; Armani is the King of the Game and no one plays it better. Life, love and business are all gambles but those who take no risk have no gains.
